Photometric Catalogue of Quasars and Other Point Sources in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

چکیده
We present a catalogue of about 6 million unresolved photometric detections in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Seventh Data Release classifying them into stars, galaxies and quasars. We use a machine learning classifier trained on a subset of spectroscopically confirmed objects from 14th to 22nd magnitude in the SDSS i-band. Our catalogue consists of 2,430,625 quasars, 3,544,036 stars and 63,586 unresolved galaxies from 14th to 24th magnitude in the SDSS i-band. Our algorithm recovers 99.96% of spectroscopically confirmed quasars and 99.51% of stars to i ∼21.3 in the colour window that we study. The level of contamination due to data artefacts for objects beyond i = 21.3 is highly uncertain and all mention of completeness and contamination in the paper are valid only for objects brighter than this magnitude. However, a comparison of the predicted number of quasars with the theoretical number counts shows reasonable agreement.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will carry out a digital photometric and spectroscopic survey over π steradians in the northern Galactic cap. An array of CCD detectors used in drift-scan mode will image the sky in five passbands to a limiting magnitude of r′ ∼ 23. Selected from the imaging survey, 10 galaxies, 10 quasars and selected samples of stars will be observed spectroscopically. In a...
متن کاملXMM Cluster Survey: X-ray source identification using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The XMM Cluster Survey (XCS) is predicted to detect thousands of clusters observed serendipitously in XMM-Newton pointings. We investigate automating optical follow-up of XCS cluster candidates using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) public archive, concentrating on 42 XMM observations that overlap the First Data Release of the SDSS. Confining ourselves to the inner 11 arcminutes of the XMM f...

متن کاملDeep Extragalactic VLBI - Optical Survey ( DEVOS ) II . Efficient VLBI
Context. The Deep Extragalactic VLBI-Optical Survey (DEVOS) aims at constructing a large sample of compact radio sources up to two orders of magnitude fainter than those studied in other Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) surveys. Optical identification of the objects is ensured by selecting them from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) list. Aims. While continuing to build up the DEVOS d...
متن کاملMultiepoch Sky Surveys and the Lifetime of Quasars
We present a new method to measure the episodic lifetime of quasars with current and future large-scale sky surveys. Future photometric observations of large samples of confirmed quasars can provide a direct measurement (or interesting lower limit) to the lifetime of an individual episode of quasar activity (tQ) and potentially enable the study of post-quasar host galaxies. Photometric observat...
